Taking on the Public Relations industry

From the very moment I began my degree in Public Relations there was one message that came across very strongly if I was to be successful in my career… experience is key. With the global PR industry up 7% in 2014, it is evident this is a career many people are turning to. Competition for jobs is fierce and for those of us who are just starting out, having something on your CV that stands you out from others is vital.

A valuable work placement can benefit you and your CV in many ways. Undertaking work experience is the best way to sample what the real working world of PR is like. This is crucial within any career but especially in PR. By completing 3 work placements myself, each has taught me something different about the real PR industry, all disregarding the image portrayed of the profession in movies. Let me tell you, it’s not an easy job. Trust me when I say PR is not 9-5 but the buzz of the profession is real.

Particularly from my placement at Eden PR, experience has shown me that professionals within the industry have to be and are committed to their clients and will work above and beyond to achieve success. This practice has highlighted to me the passion required to succeed in the profession and has helped me prepare for what lies ahead.

Experience also opens your eyes to whether this career is the right one for you. It prepares you in ways an educational environment can’t. You learn how an office operates, small things like answering the phone to clients, brainstorming as a team, or the bigger picture – being aware of the news agenda and how this can impact clients.  If you begin work in an agency or consultancy you have to be prepared to become an ‘expert’ in many industries. The fast paced environment of an office is something I have enjoyed being a part of.  It has been a brilliant experience for me to witness how staff at Eden PR liaise with the media and clients alike.

Many students take different paths to their PR career and the recent 2014 State of Internship Report shows that PR internships are the most popular, gathering almost 37% of the vote. This would suggest that gaining an array of varied work placements within the industry is crucial to stand out from the crowd.

If you’re passionate about PR or alternatively are unsure whether it’s for you, embark upon some work experience. You’ve got nothing to lose and everything to gain!
